Kewpie figures originated with illustrator Rose O'Neill, whose drawings debuted in Ladies' Home Journal in 1909 and became one of the most enduring characters in American commercial history. The bisque Kewpie figurine with its sideways glance was first produced in Germany around 1912; later versions, including this one, were made from commercially available molds and painted by hobbyists, each piece uniquely its own within the tradition.
