He's playing the mandolin and she's right beside him, listening — soft pastels of blue, pink, yellow, and green, flowers on her skirt, gold accents throughout, and faces painted with the kind of careful detail that the best Occupied Japan pieces are known for. A small scene, only four and a half inches tall, but complete in every way. Stamped on the bottom: "Made in Occupied Japan," which dates it precisely to the postwar Allied occupation, between 1945 and 1952. There is a small bit of paint loss on one flower on her skirt, photographed for your review.
The "Occupied Japan" mark was required by Allied authorities on all Japanese exports during the occupation period — pieces marked simply "Japan" predate or postdate this window. It's a collector's mark that tells you exactly when something was made, and pieces from this era are among the most sought after in Japanese export porcelain.
A beautiful piece for a maximalist or grandmillennial interior, a figurine collector, or anyone who appreciates a small object with a very specific history.
