This piece is part of the official Precious Moments collection, marked on the base "Jonathan & David," the date, and "Lic. Enesco Imports" — from before the line carried the Precious Moments name outright. Sam Butcher demonstrated artistic talent from an early age and, encouraged by his mother, pursued formal art training after high school. He began drawing the endearing, teardrop-eyed children he called Precious Moments as gifts for family and friends, and in the early 1970s he and his friend Bill Biel started a small company to sell the artwork as greeting cards and posters under the name Jonathan & David. The line was introduced to the public in 1975 at the Christian Booksellers Association Convention in Anaheim, where retailers responded enthusiastically. Enesco soon approached Sam about developing three-dimensional figurines from his artwork, and the original 21 Precious Moments figurines debuted in 1978. The collection has since grown to more than 1,500 pieces.
