A small boy with an apple for the teacher — one of the most enduring images of childhood, captured here in hand painted porcelain with the gentle, round-faced charm that made Joan Walsh Anglund's illustrations beloved for generations. Stamped on the bottom: "Avon Source of Fine Collectibles, 1986. Joan Walsh Anglund Collection Hand Painted Porcelain."
Joan Walsh Anglund was born in Hinsdale, Illinois in 1926 and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the American Academy of Art. It was her husband who first recognized her gift, discovering her private writings and encouraging her to illustrate them. Her first book, "A Friend Is Someone Who Likes You" (1958), sold millions of copies. She went on to publish more than 120 books of poetry and illustration. She is also the true author of the often-misattributed quote: "A bird doesn't sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song" — a line incorrectly credited to Maya Angelou by President Obama in 2012, and later mistakenly placed on a U.S. Postal Service stamp in 2015. Joan Walsh Anglund passed away on March 9, 2021.
