A cup this small shouldn't be able to command a room — and yet.
This antique German demitasse is a rare and extraordinary piece. The body is shaped to suggest a cabbage leaf, its surface embossed in fine relief and outlined entirely in hand-applied gold. The handle is a butterfly — not the simplified version you'll occasionally find on newer pieces, but a fully realized, textured form with articulated wings and unmistakable craftsmanship. The saucer echoes the same cabbage-leaf embossing with a smooth, unadorned center. The porcelain is exceptionally fine and translucent. Marked with what we believe to be an early Sitzendorfer mark — a long line with two dashes, used prior to 1902 — though we invite you to examine the photos and the mark and draw your own conclusions.
For the serious demitasse collector, this is a find. It also makes an unforgettable gift for the lover of antique porcelain or European decorative arts.
