  • Pattern:  Unnamed, we called it Winter Fruits
  • Made in Austria
  • Antique: 1884 - 1909
  • Details:  An absolutely gorgeous decorative plate by the highly regarded factory of M + Z in Austria.  It has very realistic oranges and apples with their leaves and blooms along the border. But what really makes it an outstanding piece of decor is the embossing, the scalloped edges and gold gild all around the rim, it is truly a work of art!  The plate is stamped on the back with the M+Z logo, a two headed eagle and the word Austria,  This logo was used between 1884 and 1909.  In 1909, the company changed hands but kept the MZ trademark because it was so well recognized.  This company didn't name their patterns, they had a numbering system embossed on each piece, only used as some form of mould/style reference.  This  is gorgeous plate, perfect for winter decor as all the fruits depicted are in peak season during the winter months.  It is anywhere from 112 to 137 years old, a true treasure to own or gift and in excellent condition!

The M+Z Austria company was started in 1884 when Moritz Zdekauer Bank purchased it from Augustin Novotny, (who had owned the porcelain company in 1824) at an auction.  In 1909 the firm was bought by C.M. Hutschenreuther but they kept the MZ Altrohlau mark because it was so well recognized. The Altrohlau Porcelain Factories operated till 1945, when it was nationalized. The company still operates in the Czech Republic under the name Starorolsky Porcelan Moritz Zdekauer in the town Stara Role.  (Altrohlau, Austria is now known as Stara Role which is now in the Czech Republic).
