  • Pattern:  Vintage Collectible State Plate, Oregon, The Beaver State, Homer Laughlin
  • Made in Newell, West Virginia, USA
  • Vintage: 1952
  • Details: This plate is part of a Souvenir State Plate Collection from Homer Laughlin.  This plate has a beautiful gold filigree border with tiny flowers and larger leaves.   It has the name "Oregon" written in an old fashioned font and underneath "The Beaver State".   Oregon earned this name because of their early 19th century high population of beavers kept the state financially secure, this was back when people ate beaver meat and real furs were in fashion, especially for hats.  Unfortunately early settlers over-trapped and almost destroyed the beaver population.  The beaver was so important, it is on the back of the Oregon state flag.  The top center of the plate shows the Nevada state flag, the state flower "Oregon Grape"  and towards the center right the state bird, the Western Meadowlark.  The rest are points of interest in that state.  The back is stamped: with the Homer Laughlin Eggshell Nautilus name, interestingly, this one does not have the Laughlin name, it reads:  "Eggshell Nautilus, U.S.A., M52N5".  This is a great addition to a state plate collection.   Great gift for someone moving to the state of Oregon or a birthday gift for someone born in that state.  Or collect them for yourself for states you've visited or lived in.   We also carry: Maine, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina and Virginia.
