Hand-painted in purple violets—or perhaps forget-me-nots—with green and brown leaves, the plate is bordered in gold encrusted moriage, a raised slip-beading technique. The D&C France backstamp, applied in underglaze green, confirms the piece was shipped from Limoges as plain white porcelain and hand-decorated after arriving in America.

The D&C mark places this plate within a brief but pivotal chapter of Limoges history: the 1894–1900 partnership era, just before partner Léonard Bernardaud took full control of the firm and rebranded it under his own name. Porcelain painting was a fashionable pastime for affluent hobbyists across America and Europe in the 1890s, but the precision of this plate's slip-beading points instead to the hand of a trained factory decorator rather than an amateur enthusiast.
