  • Pattern: Grecian
  • Vintage: 1961
  • Details:  A beautiful and highly Collectible Decanter by Jim Beam.   This decanter is shaped like a Grecian Pitcher that was used to carry and serve wine.  It is a blue milk glass bottle with a wonderful white decoration of the three greatest Greek Philosophers: Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, (no doubt discussing The Socratic Problem), and a nice Greek Key border below them.  It has a very nice white milk glass stopper.  This bottle was originally sold with Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, (now empty).  The decanter retains its original blue foil label around the neck that reads: "World's Finest Bourbon, BEAM, Grecian".  It also has the paper label on the back with all the information about this bourbon.  Gorgeous gift for a collector, historian, a philosopher, or anyone who admires Greek history.  Makes a wonderful decor for a bar or study.

Socrates (469/470-399 BCE) was a Greek philosopher and is often credited as one of the founders of western philosophy. Plato (l. c. 428-348 BCE) was his most famous student and would teach Aristotle (l. 384-322 BCE) who would then tutor Alexander the Great (l. 356-323 BCE). By this progression, Greek philosophy, as first developed by Socrates, was spread throughout the known world during Alexander's conquests.  Greek philosophy is known for its undeniable influence on Western thought.
