The rooster has meant good luck at the table since the Renaissance.
The story goes that in 1478, roosters in a Florence courtyard crowed and foiled an assassination plot against the Medici family — and so the patriarch ordered rooster-shaped pitchers made as a symbol of fortune. Whether this one carries that lineage or simply the cheerful farmhouse spirit the rooster has always represented, it makes a fine piece for the kitchen. Hand-painted in warm colors on a traditional double-neck ceramic form, unmarked but consistent with mid-century Japan or Italian imports. The ceramic stoppers are missing; corks can be used in their place. There is some discoloration on the back, fully photographed.
A handsome accent for a country kitchen, a farmhouse table, or an Italian-themed setting. Functional and characterful.
