A snow owl — white, immaculate, composed — is centered against a warm red ground, the high contrast giving it a graphic boldness the blue version doesn't have. This is the red apple version; the same owl also appears on a blue pear label from the same Perham Fruit Company stock.

Fred A. Perham arrived in the Pacific Northwest in 1879 and spent decades learning the fruit trade before founding his own company in 1919. The label era he printed in didn't last — wooden crates gave way to cardboard by the 1950s, and Perham's operation faded not long after — but the vivid, confident lithographs the company commissioned have made it a lasting favorite among collectors and historians today.
