A covered vegetable casserole in Royal Vitreous ironstone, with a beautifully embossed pattern and scalloped borders that speak to the full confidence of Victorian English pottery at its peak. The backstamp — “England, Royal Vitreous, J. Maddock & Sons” — places this firmly between 1880 and 1896, before the company incorporated and added “Ltd” to the name.

John Maddock founded his pottery in Burslem, England in 1830 as Maddock & Edwards. Through a century and a half of business, two world wars, and multiple family transitions, the Maddock name remained synonymous with quality vitreous ware. In 1904 they were awarded a gold medal at the St. Louis Exhibition in the USA — this piece predates even that recognition.
