This compote is a study in maximalist elegance: a reticulated (pierced lattice) border, spray gilding throughout, and a field of pink and yellow roses that covers bowl and pedestal alike. It's dateable to 1946–1956 by its original silver and red foil label reading “UCAGCO Ceramics Japan.” Also known as a Comport — today the terms Compote and Comport are used interchangeably, though “Comport” is technically an older, 16th-century variation still favored by some collectors for shallower, flatter vessels like this one.
Lovely holding bon-bons or small sweets on a dessert table, displayed on a vanity with jewelry, or simply set where the light catches the gilding.
Ucagco — which stands for United China and Glass Company, founded under the name Abe Mayer & Co. in 1850 — was among the very first American importers to sign contracts with Japan after WWII, and pieces from this early postwar window are particularly sought by collectors.
