This 1959 Whitman cloth book is the best-preserved of the cloth book group in our shop, with eight illustrations of mother and baby farm animals in the warm, rounded style of mid-century children's art. The illustrator signed the book, though the signature is not legible.

Whitman Publishing began in 1916 as a subsidiary of the Western Printing & Lithographing Company of Racine, Wisconsin, after Western took over the assets of a bankrupt Chicago children's book publisher. It grew into one of the most prolific children's publishers of the 20th century, producing books, puzzles, and games — including this line of washable cloth books — for generations of American children.
