Rudyard Kipling wrote The Jungle Book while living in Vermont in the mid-1890s, drawing on childhood memories of India, where he was born in 1865 and spent his early years before being sent to England for schooling. Published in 1894 with a sequel following in 1895, the interlinked animal fables became one of the most enduring works of English children's literature, and Kipling went on to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1907.
