"Laura Lee Hope" was a house pseudonym of the Stratemeyer Syndicate, the book-packaging company founded by Edward Stratemeyer that also produced Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys, and Tom Swift. First used in 1904 for the debut Bobbsey Twins book, the name was shared across a rotating team of ghostwriters who kept the series running for 75 years and 72 volumes.
Whitman Publishing began in 1916 as a subsidiary of the Western Printing & Lithographing Company of Racine, Wisconsin, after Western took over the assets of a bankrupt Chicago children's book publisher. It grew into one of the most prolific children's publishers of the 20th century, producing books, puzzles, and games for generations of American children.
