Sesame Street premiered in November 1969, created by Joan Ganz Cooney and Lloyd Morrisett through the Children's Television Workshop (now Sesame Workshop) as an experiment in using television to help prepare children, especially from lower-income households, for school. Jim Henson's Muppets, including Big Bird, became central to the show's success, and Western Publishing produced a long-running line of hardcover storybooks under license throughout the 1970s and 80s that carried the show's characters from the screen onto the page.
