A rare 1950 dime-store edition of the Christmas classic from Samuel Lowe Company of Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Publisher: Samuel Lowe Company, Kenosha, WI
Copyright: 1950
Format: Softcover, lithographed
Dimensions: 6.75" x 5.75"
Condition: Excellent — a pin mark through the book and some staple rust, both photographed; no tears, missing or loose pages, or writing. Please review photos closely before purchasing, as all sales are final.
This softcover lithograph was made for children, who are notorious for not taking care of their books, so finding one in this condition is a real surprise. Samuel Lowe books were sold at dime stores and never expected to last, which makes an unmarked copy like this an extremely rare find.
A wonderful gift for the vintage children's book collector or the Christmas nostalgia lover.
Samuel Lowe Company of Kenosha, Wisconsin hired exceptional mid-century artists, including Nan Pollard, Kippy (Kay Phillips), Irene Rosko, and Ruth Wood, for its affordable children's books. Samuel Lowe founded the company after leaving Whitman Publishing, going on to produce inexpensive, high-volume children's books throughout the 1940s and 50s under imprints including James & Jonathan Co.; that low-cost, mass-market approach meant most copies were read to pieces and discarded rather than preserved.
