Margaret Wise Brown (1910-1952) trained at the experimental Bank Street College of Education in New York, where progressive theories about how young children actually experience the world shaped her spare, sensory writing style. She published more than 100 books in her short career, including Goodnight Moon (1947) and The Runaway Bunny (1942), before her sudden death at 42; Garth Williams, who illustrated The Friendly Book, went on to illustrate Charlotte's Web and Little House on the Prairie.
