Lillian Hoban (1925–1998) trained at the Philadelphia Museum School of Art and spent a decade dancing professionally, including with the Martha Graham company, before turning to children's books. She illustrated the classic Frances the Badger series written by her then-husband Russell Hoban, and after their divorce created her own award-winning I Can Read titles, including the Arthur the Chimpanzee series that began with Arthur's Christmas Cookies in 1972.
