Chatter is the first volume in a series introduced by De Wolfe, Fiske & Co. in 1891 — a distinguished Boston publisher whose children's books were among the most beautifully produced of the Victorian era. This treasury of stories, nursery rhymes, and poems is filled with black-and-white engraved illustrations and opens with a lovely color illustration of three girls on the front board.

De Wolfe, Fiske & Co. was founded in Boston around 1880 by Perez Morton DeWolfe and Charles F. Fiske, and became known for finely illustrated children's gift books during the late Victorian era, publishing series like the Merry Playfellow books alongside titles like Chatter — the kind of ornately bound volumes meant to be given, treasured, and passed down.
