Car: Nakamura Penny Toy Tin Litho Fire Chief Car, Japan, Vintage 1950s

Just two and a quarter inches long, this pint-sized fire chief car still packs in every detail: “CHIEF” across the roof, “F.D.” on the doors and hood, and a helmeted crew peering through the windshield.

Every detail is printed right onto the tin. A gold Maltese cross sits on the nose between dotted-glass headlights, a gold bell and twin roof lamps mark it as the chief's car, and blue-and-white pinstripes sweep the length of the body. The rear carries an “F.D. 110” license plate, and Nakamura's tiny NT trademark and “JAPAN” appear on the rear fender. Underneath, a bright tin chassis rides on four tin wheels.

A delightful find for a tin toy or firefighting collector, or a tiny pop of mid-century color for a shadow box, curio shelf, or desk.

Toys were among the many small goods Japan's factories produced for export as the country rebuilt after World War II, and inexpensive lithographed tin toys soon filled American dime stores. Collectors often call cars this small “penny toys,” a name borrowed from the tiny tin toys once sold on the street for a penny apiece. The “110” plate turns up on other Japanese fire chief toys of the era, from penny toys like this one to larger battery-operated cars. Tokyo's Nakamura Toy, whose NT-in-a-circle mark appears on the rear fender, specialized in exactly this kind of toy: small, brightly printed cars shipped in bulk trade boxes and sold one at a time from dime-store counters.
