Gurley Novelty Company was a candle-making company founded in Buffalo, New York in 1939 by Franklin Gurley when Frank purchased Robert White’s confectionery company, W&F Manufacturing Co. The candles were commissioned by the Socony-Vacuum Oil Company (now ExxonMobil) as a way to reuse excess paraffin produced as a by-product of the oil refinery process and were originally branded as "Tavern". In 1949 Franklin Gurley bought the rights to the Tavern brand, and changed the name to the Gurley Novelty Co. Gurley was known for making small, figurine-shaped candles for the main holidays, most notably Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Halloween in shapes that included: ghosts, pilgrims, reindeer, Christmas trees, angels choir boys and of course, Santa Claus. . Gurley candles have become popular collectible items. The company closed in 1994, however, many years ago The Vermont Country Store purchased the molds and they reproduce some of the candles now (marked as VCS).
