Three small feet, two delicate handles, brick-red ground with hand painted pink florals and gold accents — this is Kutani in the Eiraku style, one of the most refined traditions in Japanese ceramics. Only three inches tall, but the porcelain is extraordinarily translucent and the painting is beautifully detailed. It carries a mark on the bottom that we were unable to identify, which is not unusual for pieces of this age and style. There is a very small chip on the top rim (hardly noticeable, but you can feel it) and one handle has a small section without color — not a chip, a manufacturing variation. Kutani ware originated in the Kaga region of Japan in the 17th century and is known for its rich palette, intricate patterns, and exceptional quality.
