The overhead desk light, the romantic reverie, the open box — it is a perfectly composed slice of 1930s domestic life, rendered with the meticulous detail and rich embossing that made this era of label design extraordinary. Notice the desk lamp — that style is very much back in fashion today. F. X. Smith's Sons Co. was started in 1862 by Francis Xavier Smith in his basement in Irishtown, Pennsylvania — eventually growing to six factories in McSherrystown employing 500 workers rolling over six million cigars a year. For 156 years they manufactured their cigars in the USA, until moving operations to the Dominican Republic in 2018.
