A long, low wooden box from a collector's estate — handmade in Germany, estimated 1940s, with an intricate band of closed black fretwork inlay running as a decorative band on the lid and sides. The natural wood interior is visible through a soft varnish. Four small ball feet. Hinged lid with a locking mechanism, though the key is long gone.
The technique of marquetry — inlaying wood with contrasting materials — goes back to Pharaonic times. This piece carries that tradition in a quiet, disciplined form: no gilt, no flourish, just precise handwork in two tones of wood.
On a shelf, stacked with other collected boxes, on an entry table for keys, or on a desk — it earns its place anywhere it lands. A serious piece for a serious collector.
