The scalloped rim has tiny indentations designed to hold flower stems in place without a frog, which is why pieces like this are called rose bowls — though it works equally well as a candy dish, trinket bowl, or vanity accent. This particular bowl shape was only produced for one year, making it genuinely scarce. Amberina was originally developed by New England Glass Company in 1883 — a heat-sensitive glass that shifts from ruby red to amber gold depending on where it was reheated. L.E. Smith Glass Company, founded in 1907 in Jeannette, Pennsylvania, produced colored glass from the mid-1920s onward and became one of the most respected names in American decorative glass. Their Amberina pieces, which they may have called "Flame," are among their most collectible. Smith Glass closed in 2005.
