Oneida's roots trace back to 1848, when John Humphrey Noyes founded the Oneida Community, a utopian religious commune in upstate New York. The Community began making silver-plated flatware and hollowware in 1899 under the "Community Plate" mark, and in 1935 the company was renamed Oneida Ltd. to distinguish its premium tableware from its lower-cost subsidiary brands. Over more than a century, Oneida grew into one of the largest tableware and cutlery manufacturers in North America — an unlikely legacy for a company that began as a 19th-century commune.
