Space Age is the companion volume to the six-part PBS series, produced by WQED Pittsburgh and NHK Japan with the National Academy of Sciences and NASA and hosted by Patrick Stewart. It traces space exploration from the rocket pioneers and Werner von Braun through the Cold War space race and the rise of satellites, and looks ahead to a human mission to Mars. It has color illustrations, a bibliography and an index. The dust jacket still shows its original $30 price on the front flap, and the back flap carries information about the author. The stamp was issued on the first day of its release, at the Postage Stamp Mega-Event in Anaheim, to honor Challenger's 1983 STS-7 mission. The Anaheim postmark on this copy shows it was added to the book after publication.
Display it with the jacket facing out and let the Challenger stamp inside start the conversation. It's for space-history readers, anyone who watched the PBS series, collectors of space stamps and NASA memorabilia, and fans of Patrick Stewart, and a gift for anyone who stayed up for shuttle launches.
William J. Walter Jr., later known as Chip Walter, developed the Space Age series for WQED beginning in 1989 and wrote this companion book, his first, for Random House. The series was created to celebrate International Space Year in 1992, the 500th anniversary of Columbus's voyage. The Challenger stamp joins the story of the shuttle era to its pages. The USPS issued it in 1995 as the $3 Priority Mail rate stamp. The pairing of PBS history with a first-day stamp makes this a small space-history keepsake.
