"Zeugnis hoher Braukunst." Certificate of High Brewing Art. Since 1870.
This large glass beer mug from Binding Brewery in Frankfurt carries that inscription proudly — along with the Binding Bier name in blue and their iconic eagle logo in red and white. Crystal clear glass with an interesting pattern of indented squares all around the body, narrowing at the base for a satisfying heft in hand. Holds 0.5L — that's 17 ounces of whatever you're pouring.
The Binding Brewery was founded in Frankfurt in 1870 by Conrad Binding and remains the largest brewery in the state of Hessen. Their eagle logo is deeply woven into Frankfurt culture — the same eagle appears in the city crest and on the uniforms of Eintracht Frankfurt, the Bundesliga football club. Red, white, and black: the colors of the city, the team, and the beer. Over the years Binding has expanded to include Henninger, Clausthaler, and Schöfferhofer under their umbrella, with a US branch in Norwalk, Connecticut.
