Each tall, tapered cup is printed in vivid red with Carling's Black Label oval front and center. The cups are marked Dixie and carry the code FBL-25 along with a Cleveland, Ohio imprint, details important to collectors of breweriana. At 14 ounces, they were made for a generous pour of draft beer. Because they were never used, the wax lining and printing are fresh, which is uncommon for disposable advertising pieces of this age.
A fun find for a bar cart, a retro game room, or a collector of breweriana and beer advertising, and a good gift for the vintage beer fan who has everything.
Carling traces its beginnings to 1840, when English immigrant Thomas Carling began brewing ales and lagers in London, Ontario. In 1927 the company rebranded its signature lager from "Black & White" to Black Label, a name that went on to carry the brand across North America. After Prohibition, Carling expanded into the United States, opening its Cleveland, Ohio brewery in 1933-34 as the Brewing Corporation of America, later renamed Carling Brewing Co. Carling operated in Cleveland until leaving the city in 1971, which means a Cleveland imprint places a piece before that date. The company later built large plants such as the one in Natick, Massachusetts, and the brand became famous for its "Hey Mabel, Black Label" advertising slogan. Waxed paper cold-drink and beer cups of this specific style were widely manufactured during the mid-to-late 20th century by major paper cup companies like Dixie and Sweetheart before the industry shifted toward polyethylene-lined and plastic alternatives.
