The most popular dinnerware pattern ever made in America. This one is dated 1966, made in California, and completely original.
This is a vintage Franciscan Desert Rose oval divided piece — hand-painted embossed earthenware in the iconic pink roses and green leaves pattern, marked 1966, produced by Gladding McBean / Interpace in California. One available.
The Desert Rose pattern was introduced in 1941 and never really stopped — it became one of the two best-selling dinnerware patterns in American history, so beloved that collectors have pursued it continuously for over eighty years. This piece dates to 1966, when production was still in California under the Interpace ownership era, hand-painted as it always was — the soft off-white earthenware body, the raised embossed roses, the careful hand-applied color that made each piece slightly unique. Marked on the base with the 1966 date stamp.
The history behind it is worth knowing in full. Desert Rose was the second hand-painted embossed pattern developed by Gladding McBean — Apple came first in 1940, Desert Rose followed in 1941. Both became company legends. Over the decades the brand passed through Interpace (1962–1979), Wedgwood (1979–1984), and eventually to Johnson Brothers. Production moved from California to England in 1983, then to China in 2004. Desert Rose was finally discontinued in 2013. Apple followed in 2011. All Franciscan production ceased in 2015. A California-made, dated piece like this one — from the height of the pattern's original run — is precisely what serious Franciscan collectors seek.
Today it serves beautifully as a trinket dish, a ring tray, a desk catchall, or a decorative accent in a garden room, sunroom, or cottage interior. Hand wash only — not dishwasher safe.
A wonderful find for a Franciscan collector, a Desert Rose enthusiast, or anyone who loves the enduring charm of America's most beloved floral pottery.
