Some pieces don't need to announce themselves. This Wedgwood Blue Jasperware ashtray, dated 1959 and made in England, simply is — quietly refined, unmistakably beautiful.
The white relief decoration depicts the mythical Aurora, Goddess of the Dawn — third child of Hyperion, driver of a two-horse chariot. The border has grape clusters and trailing vines, a signature of Wedgwood's neoclassical style. The powdery blue is the most sought-after of all Jasperware colorways, and for good reason.
While made as an ashtray, collectors today display these as trinket dishes, shelf décor, or grouped together as a small wall gallery.
