A sailor holds his sweetheart close — and someone thought this was the perfect way to sell pianos.

That charming disconnect is exactly what makes Victorian trade cards so beloved. Before print advertising existed as we know it, merchants distributed small, beautifully lithographed cards to attract customers — the 19th century equivalent of the business card, but far more lovely. This one advertises Huntington Pianos sold through Bailey's Music Rooms of Burlington, Vermont, a music retailer that opened in 1869 and survived an impressive 112 years before closing in 1983. The Huntington Piano Company operated from approximately 1894 into the 1960s. The illustration — a sailor's tender farewell or joyful return, rendered in full color — has nothing to do with music and everything to do with the era's appetite for romance and sentiment. A deep crease on the bottom right and a light one on the upper left are noted and photographed; the colors remain vivid.
