  • Vintage Print Advertisement, Double-Sided: Baby Ruth Candy "Good Fun Good Food" / American Boy Magazine Cover by Lawrence N. Wilbur, Ephemera, Original Print Ads, Illustration Children Cutting a Baby Ruth Bar, RARE Collectible, 14x11 (Discontinued)
  • Made in USA
  • Vintage:  1928
  • Details:  This is a very old, rare, and very large Baby Ruth candy advertisement.  This is a full page, full color magazine advertisement from American Boy magazine.  The tag line is: "Good Fun Good Food!".  Baby Ruth was a brand from The Curtis Candy Company in Chicago, IL, contrary to popular belief it was not named after Babe Ruth, but after President Grover Cleveland’s daughter, Ruth Cleveland (1891–1904), who's nick name was Baby Ruth.  The other side is the actual cover of the American Boy magazine dated June 1928, with a western themed drawing from Lawrence N. Wilbur, (1897 - 1988) of a young man holding a rifle, part of a caravan headed west known as Wagon Trains.  These are original pages from a magazine, not a print or reproduction, the colors remain bright, you'll receive both with this order.
  • Materials:  Paper
  • Dimensions:  14" x 11" (Entire Page)
  • Condition:  Vintage - Used.  Very Good Vintage Condition.  These are original pages from a magazine.  A used item, almost 100 years old, there are slight imperfections including tears at the edges, (can be framed or trimmed off).  There is light tanning (yellowing) of the paper, acceptable due to age. Also, the magazine cover has the mailing label still attached, we didn't attempt to remove it, some of you know how to remove these without damaging the paper.  If you're purchasing this for the art-work, we believe it can be trimmed just below the mailing label and still be framed and displayed without issue.  Please review all pictures and make sure you love this item before purchasing, we can't accept returns.  Please remember these are VINTAGE and ANTIQUE items, they are NOT new, every effort has been made to show any scratches, wear and tear and imperfections.

The Curtis Candy Company was founded in 1916 in Chicago, IL by Otto Schnering.  The Baby Ruth candy bar, introduced in 1921, was one of their best known brands.  They had several other brands, some you'll recognize:  Butterfinger, Polar Bar, Coconut Grove, Jolly Jacks, Penny Log, Saf-T-Pops, CHICOS peanuts (we currently have this ad available, while quantities last), and lots of "penny candy".   In 1964 Curtis Candy was sold to Standard Brands.  In 1981 they were acquired by Nabisco, later by Nestlé in 1990.  Today their brands, (that still exist), are owned by the Ferrara Candy Company (part of Ferrero).

Lawrence Nelson Wilbur was born in Whitman, Massachusetts in 1897.  He moved to New York and studied at the Grand Central Art School in 1925.  He was a photo-engraving finisher, doing work for many fine engraving shops in New York, and well-known magazines. He expanded his works to include: wood engravings, woodcuts, linoleum block prints and lithographs, as well as paintings and drawings.  He was a much loved artist with woks in the collection of several museums like the Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Gallery, Philadelphia Museum, and the Library of Congress, etc.
