The Echo album, released that same year, reached number 10 on the U.S. charts. It was a deeply personal record — Petty wrote much of it during a painful period in his life, and it shows. Tom Petty was an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, and actor — lead singer of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers since 1976. Over his career he sold more than 80 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time. He passed away on October 2, 2017.
