The sticks and ribs are celluloid with pretty cut-work and gold design, in an Asian/Oriental style. There are no markings, but this fan is believed to be a Chinese import.
A lovely piece of home decor — framed and hung on the wall, opened on a stand, or displayed as a backdrop for figurines and other knick-knacks.
Folding hand fans were introduced in the West in the 17th century, quickly becoming both a practical way to stay cool and a fashion accessory akin to a brooch or bracelet — worn and shown as small pieces of art.
