  • Pattern:  Astra (Discontinued)
  • Vintage 1970’s
  • Made in Germany by Nachtmann
  • Details:  This is a gorgeous 24% lead crystal shallow bowl/dish by Nachtmann.  This is a very intricate pattern with gorgeous cuts and pinwheels, it is finished along the rim with cuts, much like a picket fence.  I believe this was part of Nachtmann’s  servingware line and is meant to hold nuts, olives, candy or any other small food item.  However, if you have several, they could very well be used as a small salad plate, dessert or fruit plate.  Please note that Nachtmann has two different patterns both named “Astra”.  Ours is the one Replacements.com calls “pattern code: NCHASTRA, described as having: Cut Stars, Vertical Lines On Bowl” which was discontinued in 1994.  It consists of pinwheels with cut stars in the center and vertical groves/lines separating each pinwheel.  The other Astra pattern by Nachtmann was discontinued in 2001 and looks very different from this one.  This dish is a heavy piece, pricing already includes shipping so no surprises at check-out.  Gorgeous by the front door for keys or to collect change or earrings on a dresser.

Nachtmann Lead Crystal Works was a fine glass maker, founded in 1834 by Michael Nachtmann in Unterhütte, Oberpfalz. In 1907 the company was taken over by Zacharias Frank who moved the headquarters to Neustadt an der Waldnaab.  Mr Frank purchased the Kristall Glasfabrik Riedhutte which was founded in 1452. At its newly acquired historical site, Nachtmann began producing its first highly polished lead crystal stemware line.  During WWII the factory suffered damage, so in 1945 when the war ended, Nachtmann rebuilt the partially destroyed production facilities and began with the production of lead crystal in Neustadt and Riedlhütte. In 1983 a third, very modern lead crystal plant was founded in Weiden in der Oberpfalz, a city in Bavaria.  In 2004 the Nachtmann company was taken over by its rival, the Austria-based Riedel Crystal which now carries its name and brand. As of 2011 the Nachtmann website is active and continues selling fine glass/crystal under the Riedel umbrella.
