- Details: This a very pretty pattern and unusual shape bowls in the Suimonowan style. Unlike the rounded bowls used in the West, these are truly Japanese style soup bowls. They’re made of stoneware with a very simple design of Lotus Flowers (or Water Lilies) in red and white alongside smaller white flowers. There are green leaves and blue tones to represent the water. The pattern is on both sides of the bowl, and bowls are rimmed in gold. There is a back stamp that reads “Sone China Nagoya”. These plates would look especially nice on a Spring or Summer table setting, perhaps with other earthy items like bamboo flatware and weaved sea grass/ wicker place mats. Would enhance a chinoiserie or Zen setting. There are many uses for these bowls outside the dinning room as well.

SONE China is located in Nagoya, Japan and has been in business for decades. When World War II ended, they were one of the successful firms that survived the conflict and came back strong in the international marketplace. SONE produced very nice fine china in at least 300 patterns, as well as high quality stoneware. Some are named, but most, like this pattern, are not.
Suimonowan is a shallow, flat bowl, mainly used for serving nearly dry “takiawase” (an assortment of mixed vegetables), but is also used to serve clear soup. It is traditionally made of lacquerware, it is also common to find them in stoneware. Unlike ordinary Japanese soup bowls, suimonowan are shallower, with wider openings. Japanese people hold their dishes in their hands when they eat, for this reason, Japanese food vessels are smaller, lighter and easier to hold than Western ones.
