  • Pattern: The Duffy Malt Whiskey Company
  • Made in Rochester, NY
  • Antique: 1886-1910
  • Details:  This is an extraordinary bottle with an extraordinary history.  The Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 was enacted, in great part, due to the fraudulent advertising of the Duffy Whiskey Company.  The bottle is a rich dark amber (they also made these in olive yellow and yellowed amber colored glass) and it has a tooled sloping collared mouth.  The front is embossed: “THE DUFFY MALT WHISKEY COMPANY, ROCHESTER, N.Y., U.S.A” and the Duffy logo.  The bottom is embossed:  PATd AUG. 24 1886.   It is a bit heavy for its size, our price already includes shipping fees.  Our price is very fair, Duffy bottles in this condition start bid at $100 and sell for $200-300 or more.  This is a great bottle for a serious collector as it is in absolutely perfect condition.  We have not cleaned it because many like the look of the original patina as found.
  • Material:  Glass
  • Dimensions:  10 inches Tall and 3.0 inches in Diameter.
  • Condition:  Antique – Used.  Excellent Condition.  There are no chips, or cracks on this piece.  It is dirty, however, some collectors prefer it this way so we did not clean it.  There are some light surface scratches , very minor, acceptable due to age/use/wear.  PLEASE SEE PICTURES AS THAT IS ALSO PART OF OUR DESCRIPTION.  Please review all pictures and make sure you love this item before purchasing, we can’t accept returns.  All sales final.  Please remember these are VINTAGE and ANTIQUE items, they are NOT new, every effort has been made to show any scratches, wear and tear and imperfections.
  • Shipping is included. (continental US only), unless otherwise noted.  This item ships Priority Mail and Insured for your protection.  AK, HI and International shoppers will see additional shipping based on your location.

Walter Bernard Duffy was a Canadian who’s family emigrated to Rochester, New York when he was about 2 years old.  Walter’s father started a cider refinery and left it to Walter upon his death in the 1870’s.  Walter expanded the business, in 1881 the Rochester directory lists Duffy as a distiller and rectifier of alcohol, “French spirits,” and malt, wheat, rye and bourbon whiskies with the Duffy Malt Whiskey Company. He also opened a second distillery in Baltimore.  This was the time when many whiskey makers were advertising their product for “medicinal purposes” and Duffy decided he would do one better and actually list all the things his whiskey could “cure”.  In 1905 Duffy’s legal troubles with the government started, all this publicity helped the passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act in 1906. Eventually the only penalty Duffy suffered was he would have to pay a liquor tax.  By the time of Walter Duffy’s death in 1911, at age 70, the New York Times called Duffy “one of Rochester’s best known business men and financiers”.  Duffy had amassed great wealth, owned several companies and held stock in some prestigious hotels, theaters and other large companies.  After his death the company underwent many changes.  In 1915 Duffy’s became a “tonic”, even though the product was still pretty much the same. The distillery moved to Los Angeles and the name changed to Duffy’s Laboratory, Ltd.  The bottle and the logo also changed, however, by 1926 the company that Walter fought so hard for, went out of business.
