Towle silversmith’s history can be traced back as early as 1690 but it wasn’t until 1857 that Anthony Frances Towle and his apprentice, William P. Jones, formed Towle & Jones. They have a long and complicated history with acquisitions, bankruptcies and re-starts, however, as it relates to this piece here is what we know. Sigma the Tastesetter was a registered trademark of the Towle/Sigma Giftware Corporation. The Sigma trademark was filed on March 31, 1981 to sell tableware and decorative accessories They cancelled the trademark in August of 1989.
