Description

  • Made in Kentucky, USA
  • Vintage: 1984
  • Details:   This is a really nice stoneware pitcher made by Louisville Stoneware in Kentucky.  It has a wonderful shape that widens on the bottom and the pour spout also has a nice shape.  The decor is a simple but beautiful hand painted rendition of a mare and her young horse (maybe a yearling), galloping.  The design is only on one side, it’s blank on the other side.   This company is  best known for making pieces to commemorate the running of the Kentucky Derby so it’s no surprise this piece features horses.  It has that special stoneware grayish tone and it’s accented in blue.  The horse images are in blue as well.  The pitcher is quite heavy for its size, the price reflects some of the shipping fees we will incur.  We believe it is food safe, the company claims their “dishes made at the factory have been proven to be safe for use in ovens, microwave ovens, and dishwashers, and can retain heat for keeping food warm”.  The company is still in business and you can contact them if there are any questions on food safety.  Would be great for holding kitchen utensils, with fresh or silk flowers, or lovely to display on its own, perhaps as part of a vignette or on a bookshelf.  Great for a horse lover, for a child’s room, for country / farmhouse decor or a Derby party.

Every effort has been made to show scratches, wear and tear and imperfections. Refunds will not be given unless there’s gross misrepresentation of condition.

Louisville Stoneware has a long history, they are one of the oldest stoneware companies in the US.  It started as the J.B. Taylor Company in 1815 in Louisville, Kentucky.   It wasn’t until 1970 that the company was sold and the name was changed to Louisville Stoneware.  Their specialty is decorating pottery with Kentucky Derby and Christmas themes.  They also create personalized items and items specific for other vendors such as Cracker Barrel. The clay used by the company comes from western Indiana, and may be up to 250 million years old.  The company is still open and they have a wonderful visitors center.
