The red side is their traditional logo, a large "A," and the words "the Quality Dairy, locally owned, locally operated." The blue side shows two children walking, a boy and a girl, holding books, and says "They need MILK for Energy." The square bottom dates the bottle after the 1940s. Royden A. "Roy" Blunt, president of Buck Glass Company, is credited with designing the first square milk bottles that were successful for a long time, called "the square" or sometimes "the modern square" by the 1950s. Previous designs of square bottles did not do well in the market, and the idea did not really catch on nationwide until the late 1940s.

A nostalgic piece for a milk bottle collector or a dairy or farmhouse display.

Harrisburg Dairies was originally founded through a partnership between Ben Wolfe and Elias Wager in 1931. In 1946 it was incorporated and an organizational structure was built that has always remained family owned and operated. Edwin Wagner became Ben Wolfe's partner when his father, Elias, passed away, and later, when Ben Wolfe died, his son-in-law, Fred Dewey, took over the business.

For many collectors, milk bottles carry a nostalgic quality of a bygone age. The most prized are embossed (raised glass lettering) or pyroglazed (painted) with the names of dairies, which were used for home delivery so that the bottles could find their way back to their dairies. Since the 1930s, milk bottles have used pyroglaze or ACL (Applied Color Label); before then, names were embossed using a slug plate inserted into the bottle mold. The first home milk deliveries occurred in 1785 in rural Vermont, the first glass milk bottle was patented in 1874 in the United States, and in the 1920s advertisements began to appear on milk bottles, etched on the glass using a sandblasting technique.

Browse our shop for more collectible bottles to round out your collection.

https://www.antigotrunk.com/products/vintage-glass-milk-bottle-red-and-blue-pyro-harrisburg-dairies-harrisburg-pa
