  • Pattern:  SAD51 (Discontinued)
  • Made in:  Japan
  • Vintage: circa 1980's
  • Details:  A very beautiful decorative shallow bowl in the Imari style (characteristic floral designs with most of the surface being highly colored over-decoration).  These oriental patterns are beautiful, and there is so much significance and meaning within the decorations.  The bowl is made of fine porcelain by Andrea by Sadek and is signed by the artist on the back which leads us to believe it may be hand-painted.  The plate features large blue flowers and smaller pink/peach flowers with green leaves and blue branches.  There are several geometric shapes all around the border, the verge is done in a pink/peach Uroko (rokubosei) pattern.  Please see below for the meaning of this, as well as other patterns on this bowl.  If given as a gift, it would be great to tell your recipient a little about the bowl.  We left the furniture protector felt dots on, as found.  The bowl retains its original gold foil sticker which reads:  "Andrea by Sadek, Made in Japan".   This piece would make a beautiful addition on a side table, great at the entrance table for mail, keys, etc.

Japanese patterns: Looking from the outer border towards the center, we find the Shippo Pattern which is the green woven pattern with green dots in the center, it symbolizes a Happy Ending.  The other half of this border has several dots/circles with patterns within the balls, such as: Seigaihan which symbolizes Continued Peaceful Living.  There is more Uroko pattern within the geometric circles, Uroko has the power of driving out evil. Kikkou is made up of tortoise shell shapes and its a symbol of longevity and a prayer for long life.  The small flowers within the circles are Kiku, (Chrysanthemums), symbolize longevity and rejuvenation and Ume, symbolizing luck, nobility, purity, devotion. Lastly, the large flowers in the center we believe are cherry blossoms or Sakura and they are a symbol for Beginning.  Hope you found this interesting and gives you a deeper appreciation for such a beautiful and joyful bowl.

Andrea by Sadek was founded in 1936 by Charles and Norman Sadek and it is still family owned.  It is also known as Charles Sadek Import Company and they are  headquartered in New Rochelle, New York.  Charles named the company Andrea in honor of his daughter, who is still involved in the design of their products.  After WWII Norman Sadek started trade with Japan an inspired Japanese factories to produce higher quality products.  You can still find, if rarely, Andrea by Sadek products in the market with the stamp “Occupied Japan”.   Sadek is a leader in the gift and tableware industry, they have beautiful porcelain products such as: flowers, birds and other figurines, as well as salt and pepper shakers, tea sets and tea accessories, lamps, dinnerware and much more.  Sadly in November, 2010, Norman  Sadek passed away.  Today his son Jim, along with his wife, and Norman's daughters Andrea and Lauren, all run the company.
