Black lacquered metal with a temple pagoda scene etched and gilded in brass — a mountain landscape of remarkable delicacy, rendered in the ancient Japanese art of Chokin. At eight and a half inches tall with a graceful gooseneck profile, this vase has a presence well beyond its size. The black finish appears lacquered to resist tarnishing, and the piece retains its original "Fine Arts, Japan" foil sticker. Note that some of the lines visible in photos are reflections from the highly polished surface, not damage.

Chokin is one of Japan's most venerated decorative arts — the ancient craft of engraving copper or other metals and inlaying them with gold and silver. Dating back over a thousand years, it was traditionally used to ornament swords and armor before finding its way into decorative objects in the Meiji era and beyond. A mid-century piece in this technique, in this condition, is a genuinely fine find.

A beautiful piece for a chinoiserie or Asian-inspired interior, a collector of Japanese decorative arts, or anyone who appreciates extraordinary craftsmanship in a small and elegant object.
