The yellow map is lettered in black and marks several cities including: Kansas City, St. Louis, Springfield, Independence, St. Joseph, Columbia, and Jefferson City, a capitol dome sits under the banner.  Off the map, small black vignettes along the sides and bottom show Mark Twain Cave, the State Capitol and Bagnell Dam. The fired-on design is raised. The glass is signed \"GF\" at the upper left of the map, and the base is unmarked.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA great find for the collector building a fifty-state set, for a Missourian, for Mark Twain fans and Ozarks vacationers, and for anyone with a stubborn streak.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMissouri earned its reputation for mules in the 1800s. Mules arrived in the state in the 1820s, and Missouri breeders went on to develop a larger draft mule so sought-after that, for decades, the state was the nation's premier producer. Missouri mules pulled pioneer wagons west, plowed the state's fields and hauled troops and supplies in both World Wars, and in 1995 the mule became the official state animal. This glass has fun with that famous stubborn streak, showing the mule winning the argument. At Hannibal, Mark Twain Cave is where young Samuel Clemens explored, and it inspired the cave in \u003cem\u003eTom Sawyer\u003c\/em\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat small \"GF\" is worth a look. It stands for Gay Fad Studios, founded by Fran Taylor, who started decorating glassware at home in 1939 because she couldn't find anything but heavy, formal, Victorian-style pieces for casual entertaining. She built that idea into an international company based in Lancaster, Ohio, that ran until 1962, she was one of the few women running a glassware company at the time. Gay Fad bought plain blanks from makers like Hazel Atlas and hand painted, or silk screened them, with whimsical designs. Collectors still celebrate the pieces, and the studio has been revived in Lancaster with a museum of original glassware.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Hazel Atlas Corporation was founded in 1885 in Wellsburg, WV, by Charles N. Brady and C.H. Tallman. It began by making glass inserts for zinc canning-jar lids and grew into the largest glass-container manufacturer in the world.
