Oneida LTD started as "The Oneida Community" and was founded by John Humphrey Noyes in upstate New York in 1848.  Being in a community allowed the members time to make many items including flatware which they sold to keep the community running.  This continued until 1879 when the community split.  In January 1894, Pierrepont Burt (P. B.) Noyes, the son of Oneida’s founder, joined the company and brought with him a wider world experience, by the 1930s, Oneida had become less of a "community" and more like a regular business.  Pierrepont Burt Noyes grew Oneida and it became a company with a great reputation for excellence and tremendous brand recognition.  In 1935 the company's name was changed to Oneida LTD.  As a cost cutting measure in the 1960's, Oneida switched their focus to stainless steel flatware, instead of the more expensive silver-plated and sterling flatware, which actually broadened their market reach and sales increased again.  Through many ups and downs, Oneida Ltd. is now the world’s largest stainless steel and silver-plated flatware maker, serving both private consumers and food service industries.  Oneida operates all over the world in the USA, Canada, Mexico, the UK and Italy. Besides flatware, Oneida also markets silver and silver plated holloware, china, crystal, stemware, and gift items and licenses its name to makers of linens, cookware, and utensils. Interesting fact:  Oneida provides tableware for the Royal Caribbean cruise ships, Ruby Tuesday’s restaurants, and Hyatt Hotels among many others.
