He traveled to France in search of a manufacturer who could produce porcelain for the American market and settled in Limoges. His son Theodore went to the USA to handle distribution and marketing, the other son, Charles Edward, took over management of the firm. The family kept branching out: David's nephew Charles Field Haviland founded his own porcelain house in 1859, and David's grandson Johann started a company in Bavaria in 1907. Theodore built his own factory in the early 1890s after the family partnership dissolved, and his son William began making china in the United States in 1936. That is where this set comes from. The backstamp "Theodore Haviland New York, Made in America" marks porcelain produced in Pennsylvania by Shenango Pottery to the Haviland formula, a partnership that ran from 1936 to 1958. Charles Edward's company closed in 1931, and in 1941 William bought all the marks, models, and rights from Haviland & Co., reuniting the family name.

Browse our shop for more vintage Haviland and other dinnerware to round out your collection.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0624/1733/8577/files/IMG_0015_5871e9e8-69cb-4a57-a5b5-ed3b65875f50.jpg?v=1792094129
https://www.antigotrunk.com/products/tea-cups-saucers-theodore-haviland-arbor-grape-clusters-vintage-1950
