Long before cookie cutters, there was the Springerle — a rolling pin carved with images that pressed into dough, leaving behind little scenes meant to tell stories or mark the seasons.
This West German example carries 12 hand-carved panels featuring a charming menagerie: duck, owl, butterfly, fish, birds, leaves, and more. The tradition behind it stretches back to 14th-century Germany, where such pins were used to make anise- or lemon-flavored cookies for spring and Easter celebrations. This one was never machine-made — the carving is pleasingly imperfect in the way only handwork can be, and the wood has developed a warm, honey-toned patina from years of use.
A lovely gift for the baker who has everything, the rolling pin collector, or anyone drawn to the folk art traditions of old Europe. Display it in a kitchen window, nestle it in a bread bowl, or actually use it — it still works beautifully.
