Two small gray and white birds perched on a log, their faces impossibly gentle — the whole piece in the softest possible palette of gray, white, and the faintest green. There is something quietly romantic about the way they sit together, which is perhaps why this kind of piece was always given as a gift.
Otagiri Mercantile Company (OMC) was a San Francisco-based importer founded in 1954 that distributed fine Japanese ceramics and giftware to high-end department stores and gift shops across America until the company was acquired by Enesco in 1994. From the mid-1970s to mid-1980s, Otagiri had pieces produced exclusively for them — this is one of those. The original OMC foil label was unfortunately lost in cleaning, but provenance is confirmed. Otagiri pieces have become increasingly sought after since the company's closure.
A lovely gift for a bird lover, a romantic at heart, or anyone who appreciates something small and beautifully made. Wonderful for Valentine's Day, an engagement, a bridal shower, or a birthday.
